Many of us dread visits to the doctor, but it’s impossible to manage diabetes without one. Most doctors chose this profession because they want to help people like you. Finding the right doctor and having a translator will make a real difference in your health and your family’s well-being. Going to the doctor today is an investment in your health and can help prevent expensive hospital bills in the future.
Your doctor is your partner. You want to find someone who treats you with respect, listens to you, and makes you feel comfortable. If your doctor makes you feel judged or guilty, you can always see another doctor in the same office. If your health care coverage allows, you can also switch to a different doctor’s office.
Most doctors’ offices and all hospitals provide translation services. You can ask about translation services when you call to make your appointment. Please advocate for yourself and request a translator so you can fully understand what your doctor is saying and have your questions clearly communicated. You already pay for these services through your taxes, so take advantage of them. Good doctors want you to understand what they are saying and they want you to be heard. Your children don’t have the medical knowledge necessary to translate complicated questions about diabetes, so your doctor will also appreciate having a professional translator.
Remember, as a patient, you have rights. Your health is important and you deserve a doctor who makes you feel comfortable and valued. You need to see your doctor 2-4 times a year. Your doctor will give you crucial information and will also check your eyes and feet. So, find a doctor that you work well with and set up your next appointment. The more regularly you go, the better your health will be and the fewer complications, worries, and medical bills you’ll face later.
